FAQ 1.0.1

PluginsI have never liked the apperance of the FAQMAN plugin found at PortalParts and didn't like the fact that it did not use GeekLog templates nor security model. That is why I decided to create my own FAQ plugin that can be downloaded here.

Features include:
  • GeekLog security model applies to both FAQ categories and FAQ questions.
  • FAQ questions and categories may be sorted in several different ways including modified date and the number of hits (i.e. views) each answer has.
  • A block showing a random FAQ question.
  • Ability to ignore hits made by users having certain access rights.
  • Displays top ten viewed FAQs and FAQ totals on the statistics page.
  • Ability to list new FAQs (period configurable) in the What's new block.
  • Supports autolinks to create links to FAQ questions (faq) and categories (faqcat).
  • FAQ answers support autolinks to create links in the text.
  • Ability to import FAQ topics from the older FAQMAN plugin.
  • Displays last modified date in category listings.
Features may be enabled and disabled using the plugin configuration file.

NOTE: If you import faqman topics the IDs will change so old faq autolinks might not work properly. The fix for now is to manually edit faq question IDs after the import, but a fix for this will be added in later versions of this plugin.

Very good plugin! Thank you for releasing. I did not one issue when importing from FAQMAN, the INSERTS into your FAQ are not escaped, so I received an error when it tried to insert an answer that had embedded quotes. A quick addslashes() to the data fixed the issue.

Thanks again!

Hey, I see Mevans is here. :-) If you want your plugins to be as successful as his Media Gallery, I suggest you maintain an active forum. You won't get far from separated comments to each article.

Anyway, I wasn't too impressed by FAQMan too, which is why I prefer MultiFAQ. I don't suggest you look it up because the official version is from 2004 and it's crippled. Yes, crippled. However, a newer and working version was custom made for yours truly. So what's the big deal about this plugin? Oh, just that it's the only natively multilingual aware Geeklog module in existence so far...that is, each user sees the topics, questions and answers according to the language that is set for them in Geeklog!

This concept is brilliant, but unfortunately the plugin still has hardcoded language strings and endless potential that is wasted because the author doesn't really do anything with it. If you implement it as your basis instead of FAQMan, with my help (just ask Mevans :-) we could make it the Media Gallery of FAQs.

Well, multilanguage support for content is usefully a pain in the butt when maintaining the content, but you have a point that the impact on my plugin would be minimal since it is not my problem to keep it updated... I can still use only one language if I want to myself so I think I'll put multi language support on the TODO list for the plugin... Maybe I should look at MultiFaq import functionality also...

Regarding community I'm well aware that a forum is probably the best thing. And I don't really trust the forum bridges available so Blaine's naitive geeklog forum is the only option as I see it and I don't like it 100%, but it's probably better to have that forum instead of nothing to begin with...

Well, the minimum you can do is make the default display "nested" and not "flat"...

Anyway, I've customized the native forum plugin to be standalone, so now I don't have to put anything outside the 3 regular folders of any plugin.

I can send you that and the special version of MultiFAQ. Remember, the official version is crippled!

I suggest you then just install MultiFAQ and you'll see yourself that if you don't care about multilingualism you don't have to do anything! The multilingualism is an opt in feature, if you will.
